i've modded a boss pedal and the output level rises incredibly when the mod is engaged. is there anything i can do to keep the volume level stable so i don't have to fear blowing out my speakers (and eardrums), and keep the pedal in the instruments' signal path?

depends on how you did the mod? if it's mounted on a simple switch, you could do it on a switch with an extra pole instead, and use that to switch in an extra resistor on the output.

What, you don't want your amp to catch on fire? Wink
Put a 47k between the circuit and output jack. That will limit the current enough, it won't hurt anything.

i'll make sure to post the results.

Hey guys, i think i messed up on this mod. dann, was i supposed to put in a 47 ohm resistor between the circuit and output jack?

47k ohm (not 47 ohm). Just a value to start with. Or like remork says, put it on a switch if there is one.

you might also have to put a resistor to ground on the output jack, start with 47k.

hey guys, picking up on this, i'm thinking of putting a 50k pot between the circuit and the output to control the volume more accurately, my quetion is whether it should be linear or audio? http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=206235 5

or should i just go with a 100K Dual-Ganged Stereo Volume Control? http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=206235 9

Short answer: any 100k pot will work, so get what's convenient and try it! Even better is to get a variety of pots and try them all. It's always nice to have some extra pots around for other projects anyways

Longer answer: Audio pot is best if it's wired with one lug to ground and the center lug going to the output (and the remaining lug going to the output of the circuit board). This is called a voltage divider wiring.
If you're wiring it with just two lugs (one going to the output of the circuit and one going to the output jack or bypass), then linear might be better, but really it will depend on impedance issues so you might find the audio taper will work better.
