Swapping input/output caps for more bass? [message #1869] Sun, 13 April 2008 14:25 Go to next message

Been playing the hell out of my swash after getting it back from the 'doctor' for some tweaking/touchups.

I've modded/tweaked it a hair more since then (finally adding a starve pot, and made the osc stompable).

I also used a 5k pot, with a 4k7 resistor bridged instead of the 1k for the starve and i think its nicer. It sweeps all the way to full on dead (mine seems to die about 2k and the 5k/4k7 makes a 2k2 pot).

My main question is about the input/output caps, more specifically about the lack of bass when the pedal is engaged.

Mine has a treble and bass pot, but even with the bass cranked it's nowhere near the bass present in the bypassed signal.

From reading/learning more DIY stuff, I've come to understand the in/out caps determine the amount of bass reaching the circuit, and coming out of the circuit, respectively.

Would swapping the 1uf in/out caps for larger values let more bass through? If so, what would be a decent value to jump to? Is there a design reason why theyre 1uf caps?

I finally got some sockets which I cut down to do some testing/swapping.

The nocto didn't seem to care what kind of output cap it had. 1uf, 22uf, 47uf. It all sounded the same (at least through my Fender Twin).

The swash sounds worlds better with a 22uf cap in parallel with the output cap. Alot more bottom end overall, particularly in lower gain (relatively speaking) settings.

I experimented with a diff input cap on the swash (before swapping the output cap) and it didn't seem to make much a difference, so I left that one as is.

Also, it could be that I have the presence/highs on my amp higher than ever as alot of stuff has been seeming bright lately, but the 'Highs' knob on my swash is a razorblade now. Anything higher than fully counterclockwise is asking for some serious pain!

you could try the Tone (bass/treble) section, the caps around there can be switched out for different eq... it's really a matter of preference and each swash behaves differently tonally. If you have extra TL062D's, try swapping them out too

I doubt I'll try to revoice the EQ, but I'll probably swap out the TL062D when I place my next mouser order.
