Sorry for double posting this. I put it in the miscellaneous how-to section, but then realized it might be specific to the swash.

I'm noticing a possible discrepancy between the wiring photo (the second photo on step 4 at http://www.commonsound.com/kits/doku.php?id=commonsound:pc_b oard_kit_building
(the one with the caption "wire the bypass stomp") and the wiring pdf (this i downloaded from the "PCB 'mini swash' kit instructions).

In the photo, it appears the wire coming out of the center peg of the switch (the red wire) is connected to the 4th hole on the board, the one that is not in line with the other three. On the pdf diagram, the wire coming from the center peg is in the other hole, the one on the board that does line up with the other two.

In addition, the switch is turned 180 degrees, which I know shouldn't matter, but when that happens wouldn't that mean that the input and output wires are switched?

i just attached a side by side jpeg of the images in question.

sorry this is so convoluted. If there's a way I can be clearer, let me know.

thanks!index.php?t=getfile&id=13&private=0

Aha! good eye! The PDF diagram is flipped over the horizontal axis and the two center-row wires (red and brown) are swapped. However, it will be correct either way you build it (just be consistant).
The red/brown mix-up won't matter because these two wires control the LED to turn on/off. As long as they are connected together when the stomp is "on", the light will go on as it should, it's a make-or-break connection.

Input and Output won't be reversed because the input jack is still being dis/connected to the input of the board (green/left wires), and the output jack is still going to the output (white/right wires).

This being said, perhaps I should make the pdf diagram identical to the photo to avoid confusion! thanks for finding that...

Thanks for your reply.

Now I am at the final step, doing the power supply and there is a similar issue. The wiring diagram has one of the black wires coming off pin 2 of the 7809 and connecting to the output jack whereas the photo (and the genmods.pdf) have this wire connecting to the input jack. Is this another case where it doesn't matter or is one preferable to the other? I ended up wiring my kit to be identical to the wiring diagram with regards to the stomp switch.

also, the large tab on the power jack is the ground, correct?

thanks again.

Ok, again this doesn't matter. There's two principles involved here:
1) Ground everything to one single point. "Everything" includes the board, the box, and the jacks. The single point is chosen to be the power jack's ground tab (which is the large tab).

2) Don't ground anything twice. The box itself and the input and output jacks are all made of metal, so they're all connected together. That's why we run only one wire from one and only one of the in/out jacks to the power jack.... this wire grounds the box and both in/out jacks to our chosen "single point": the power jack. It doesn't matter which jack we choose (or even if we were to run a wire and connect it directly to the box somehow), we just have to run exactly one wire and we've satisfied both rules.

hope that helps explain what's going on behind all the voodoo...Wink
